Counterpath X-lite softphone setup

X-lite is a FREE softphone from Counterpath.  It is the recommended free softphone for C-talk customers.  

To download X-lite, go to our Downloads page.  We recommend X-lite version 3 over version 4, though some customers have reported problems using version 3 on their computer.

Installing X-lite version 3
Visit the Downloads page, and download and install the X-lite version 3 file.  After installation the SIP accounts window should appear (or you can get to it from the options drop-down menu).

Click Add.  In the properties window that appears, enter the following values:

Display Name: Your name @ your company (or whatever you like)
Username: (your phone number, including area code, and without spaces)
Password: (from C-talk Welcome email)
Authorization name: (same as username)
Domain: proxy.c-talk.co.nz

Tick the "Register with domain" box
Select, "Send outbound via" Domain

Click the "Voicemail" tab.
Check the "Check Voicemail" box
Number to dial to check Voicemail: *55

Click the "Topology" tab
Under STUN Server, choose "Use specified stun server"
Enter: stun.c-talk.co.nz
Enable ICE should be ticked

Click the Advanced tab
Reregister every: 600

Click OK, then close, to go back to main X-lite window.

After 30 odd seconds, the screen should say:  Ready, Username [phone number]

If so, then the basic setup has been successful. 

Now we will add the QoS details:

Go to the "Options" menu
Click on "Advanced" in the very bottom left-hand corner
Now click on the icon above "Quality of Service"

Under "Audio QoS", check the button labeled "Use DSCP / TOS value..."
Enter the value: 46
Click OK to return to the main screen

You are now done!

Installing X-lite version 4
Go to http://www.counterpath.com/x-lite-download.html
And download the X-lite Software.  Run the installation program, accepting the default values.

Once installed, and the softphone main window has opened, click on the "Go to Account Settings" link

In the window that appears, enter these values under the respective tabs:
(leave all other values as default)

[Account]
Account name: C-talk (or whatever you like)
User ID: (your phone number, including area code, and without spaces)
Domain: proxy.c-talk.co.nz
Password: (from C-talk Welcome email)
Display name: Your name @ Your company (or whatever you like)
Authorization name: (same as username)

[Voicemail]
Number to dial to check Voicemail: *55

[Topology]
Server address: stun.c-talk.co.nz

[Advanced]
Reregister every: 600

Click OK to go back to the main window
If a message appears from Windows Firewall, make sure you click "Unblock"

After 30 seconds or less, you should see near the top of the window a green tick with "Available" next to it.

If so, then the basic setup has been successful. 

Now we will add the Advanced config:

Go to the "Softphone" menu and choose "Preferences"

Click "Audio Codecs" in the left-hand menu
Under the Available codecs list, select "GSM" and click the ">>" button, so it is added to the Enabled codecs list
Under the Enabled codecs list, select "Broadvoice-32..." and click "<<" to take it out of the enabled codecs list.
Now the only codecs under enabled should be G711a, G711u, and GSM

Now click "Quality of service" in the left-hand menu
Under "Signalling QoS", check the button labeled "Use DSCP / TOS value..." (the value should be 40)
Under "Audio QoS", check the button labeled "Use DSCP / TOS value..." (the value should be 46)
Click OK to return to the main screen

You are now done!
